11 Movies All Parents Should Watch To Understand Their Children Better


Our lives are complicated and sometimes, it becomes difficult for our parents to understand that. If movies can help bridge this gap even a little, then why not give this a shot? We are not talking about Marvel or DC, 50 Shades or The Matrix. We are talking about movies that our parents should watch to understand our lives better. Movies that are about love, relationships, tribulations, and heartbreaks. Because as young adults, we are affected by all of these and more, and if we miss out on support from our folks, we find ourselves spiralling down a rabbit hole.

This coming of age film is about an Indian teenager with cerebral palsy who relocates to America to study. The film follows her trajectory overseas where she develops a complex relationship with a blind girl. Throughout the film, her parents especially her mother remains her strongest support.


2. Coco

12-year-old boy Miguel Rivera loves music, but his entire family vehemently hates it. After he is accidentally transported to the land of the dead, where he seeks help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather, he is able to get his family on board with his dreams.



3.Wonder

Wonder is a beautiful story a family sticking together through adversity. It is an inspiring tale of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters 5th grade, attending school for the first time. The problems and successes he encounters, and how his family supports him through all of it is heartwarming to watch.



4. Inside Out

This animated film is nothing short of a masterpiece. Apart from laughs, the movie delivers important life lessons such as coping with depression and anxiety. The movie explores this and several other emotions with sensitivity which makes it a must-watch for parents.



5.Lipstick Under my Burkha

The film’s bold narrative stars four women between the ages of 18 and 55 from a yesteryear Bhopal. The feminist drama unfolds with the protagonists rebelling in small ways against the taboos of the society. The film explores different shades of female desire which makes it a must-watch for every Indian family, especially parents.


6. Secret Superstar

Another coming of age movie, Secret Superstar deals with a teenage girl’s dream of becoming a singer and her relationship with her mother. The story touches upon the themes of feminism, gender equality, and domestic violence as the girl is strongly opposed by her father.



7. Queen

A girl who goes on her honeymoon alone after her fiancé calls off the wedding is not an everyday occurrence. Yet it made parents and young adults see the reality minus the societal obligations a girl and her parents have to adhere to.


8.Finding Dory

As Dory embarks on her search for her long-lost parents, everyone in the audience learns a thing or a two about the real meaning of family along the way. It is a beautiful story about loss, parental nurturing, friendship, and loving others.



9. Boss Baby

Boss Baby is also an animated film but it too delivers important life lessons for children. The movie’s affirmation of sibling bonding and familial love coupled with some hilarious moments make the movie a worthwhile watch.



10. Hindi Medium

Parents will do anything for their children and Hindi Medium explores this sentiment to the T. Raj and Mita yearn to get their daughter Pia educated from a reputed school. They are willing to go to any length to change their circumstances to make this a reality.



11. Mom

After her stepdaughter is raped, Devki seeks help of a private detective to take revenge on the culprits after they are acquitted by the courts. The story follows the mother’s determination that she would do anything for her family is a must-watch for every parent, everywhere.
