All You Need To Know About Getting People To Respect You

When it comes to respect, there's a  simple truth that we all must accept – people respect you only if you respect yourself. Self-respect can't be fake,  and neither can it be announced.  Meaning, people will sooner or later see through you if you only act the part without doing the inner work. Neither can you go around telling everyone who crosses your path that you are a self-respecting individual. In fact, people who actually are, never say it. They just live, and let their actions do the talking. That said, sometimes, respect dwindles, because, well, that's just life.

While we can't always control how we feel, we can control how we act. So, if you want people to respect you, try these tips:

1. Be authentic
Nobody is perfect and, in fact, people respect those who aren't ashamed of their flaws, or who don’t try to hide them. Or, pretend to be someone they are not in order to please others, or fit in, or whatever else their motivation might be. Be yourself, and others will embrace you for who you are!

2. Learn to say no

This is one of the most important skills in life that, unfortunately, most of us are never taught. A yes man or woman is not attractive or inspirational. Healthy boundaries are imperative to successful living, and saying no to things we don't want to do is a part of setting those boundaries. Besides, if you say no, people will value your yes more.

3. Be consistent

Whether it's at work or in your personal life, consistency in your behaviour will make you a reliable person. We respect people we can count on, not because they will go out of their way for us, but because that is just who they are. It's a good quality to hone.

4. Talk less, do more

he thing is, if you're busy doing things that are important to you, you won't feel the need to talk about it. You will just demonstrate your work, or your passion, through action. People would rather have you do your job well and show the results, than spend hours talking about some grand idea that never comes to fruition.

5. Finally, look the part

Looking the part doesn't mean only wearing certain kinds of outfits, or power clothing, as they say. It is about how you carry yourself. Confident body language - relaxed, but straight shoulders, good posture, chin up - goes a long way. Learn how to speak well - language no bar. Nobody is born with these things. These are life skills that we learn along the way. At the root of it all is a basic thing: self-care.
